In March 1948 the British aerial base Akir (Ekron), was purchased by the Yishuv's institutes- at the sum of 75 thousand pound sterling.
Over the years it turned into Tel Nof, one of the main centers of the Israeli Air Force.
During the War of Independence, the big operations of the young air force, especially against the Egyptian invader, originated in Ekron base.
