Bab el Wad (Sha'ar Hagai) is a narrow mountain passage. Within it winds the main road from the lowland to Jerusalem. The passage is approximately 20 kilometers west to Jerusalem. During the War of Independence it was a key point in the way of the supplies convoys to Jerusalem. Heavy battles of Harel and Givati brigades raged there in order to breach the siege of Jerusalem.
