Burma Road was laid in June 1948 from kibbutz Hulda in the lowland to Shaar Hagai, in order to bypass the Jerusalem- Tel Aviv road, a road controlled by Arabs. For six months it was the only road to Jerusalem, and convoys of supplies and soldiers to the city traveled it.
