Kibbutz Yad Mordechai, south of Ashkelon, became a battle zone in the War of Independence, since it overlooked the Gaza - Tel Aviv road.
After heavy assaults from Egypt and heavy casualties, the defenders were forced to evacuate the kibbutz.
Only in Yoav operation in November 1948 was the kibbutz liberated again by the IDF.
