Safed, in upper Galilee, one of the ancient Jewish cities in Israel has been a religious center for centuries.
Following the massacre in the 1929 riots, the Jewish population in the city shriveled. Difficult battles were fought in the city during the War of Independence until its conquest in May 10th 1948.
