In the days of the British mandate, there was a military camp, approximately 14 kilometers south of Haifa, which had served as a holding camp for illegal immigrants and underground warriors since 1938.
For 10 years tens of thousands of illegal immigrants were held there. The name of the place, Atlit, was associated with many stories of illegal immigration and escape operations.
