Tiberias, located at the shore of the Sea of Galilee, is one of the four holy cities to the Jews in Israel, apart from Jerusalem, Hebron and Safed. In the riots of 1936-39 the Jews in the city were under Arabs' attacks. In the War of Independence Tiberias was the first city of mixed population to be conquered and liberated by the Hagana, in April 1948.
